- Armed Forces Day is celebrated annually in the United States and this year’s event will be marked by the Dickinson Rotary Club and the Dickinson American Legion Post 3 on Wednesday, May 15 at noon. The public is invited to the luncheon at the Biesiot Activities Center. Tickets cost $20 and are available from any Rotarian or at the door. Color guard will be provided by the American Legion Matthew Brew Post 3 Honor Guard. The key note speaker will be Dickinson native Col. Cody Volk, director of installations and environment for the North Dakota National Guard. He will be speaking about the new National Guard Readiness Center for Dickinson and NDNG updates. The event concludes with a patriotic recognition of all branches of services. Armed Forces Day is officially observed on the third Saturday each May and is dedicated to paying tribute to servicemembers, both past and present, in all six branches of the US military: the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Air Force, and Space Force. On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days. The celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense. For additional information, email dickinsonrotary@gmail.com.
