“Play Ball!” with Dickinson State and the HRWC April 23

DICKINSON, N.D. – The Heart River Writers’ Circle (HRWC) and Dickinson State University (DSU) celebrate the arrival of “America’s pastime” with a lively and entertaining account of the history, culture and future of baseball in Western North Dakota. “Play Ball!” will take place from 7 – 9 p.m. Monday, April 23, in Klinefelter Hall’s Beck Auditorium.

"We are pleased to host this springtime event celebrating baseball history and culture at DSU," said Martin McGoey, HRWC co-chair. Attendees will enjoy hearing from several speakers including former professional baseball pitcher and author Mark Littell, North Dakota writer and baseball historian Terry Bohn, DSU baseball coach and general manager of the Badlands Big Sticks Jason Watson, and local poet and baseball fan Mark Trechock.

Littell, a former major leaguer who played for the Kansas City Royals and St Louis Cardinals, will reflect on his experiences in Major League Baseball and the collection of stories included in his books “On the Eighth Day, God Made Baseball” and “Country Boy: Conveniently Wild.” According to his website, Littell’s most recent book takes you through his wild and wooly career as a baseball player, from his very first at-bat when he was 6 years old, through his career in the Major Leagues.

Bohn will discuss his book “Lots More Fun That Way: The First 30 Years of Amateur Baseball in North Dakota,” the story of the growth of the state's amateur baseball organization from its formation after World War II up until the 1960s when the availability of other recreational opportunities resulted in a decline in participation. It is also the story of the men who played, many of whom are still living, and their memories of this period in North Dakota history.

Watson will preview the future of amateur baseball in North Dakota with the arrival of the new collegiate Expedition Baseball League and franchise that will premier in Dickinson June 1, 2018. Watson will provide information on the Big Sticks players, schedule, merchandise and promotions. In addition, Trechock will share some of his baseball-themed poems.

Come celebrate the history and culture of baseball. Complimentary Cracker Jacks will be served! “Play Ball!” is free, open to the public and is a family friendly event. For more information, contact McGoey at martin.mcgoey@dickinsonstate.edu or 701-483-2142.
